Long before European settlement, Somerset County
was the summer hunting grounds for at least three different
Native American tribes- Shawnee, Iroquois, and Delaware. Today
two known trails crossed the county: one to the south- Route
40, and one to the north- Route 30.
The first permanent settlement in the county was in 1772 when Harmond Husband
brought his family to the region. The population steadily grew despite the risks
of Indian attacks such as the early 1780s attack in nearby Hanna's Town. In 1795,
Somerset County was officially formed.
The county is a popular vacation spot, offering skiing, professional theatre,
fine dining, historical sites and an abundance of antique shops. |
